A Cooking Experience for a 7 Year Old

by Nate
Recently I got to go to The Ecology Center for a cooking lesson.  A really great chef named Erika teaches a class called Farm to Fork for kids ages 6-12 there once a month.  It is perfect for me because I think I might want to have a farm and a restaurant one day.
We got to explore the garden and the farm.  We made biscuits with homemade whipped cream and strawberries from the farm.  It was really fun.

Earthroots Adventure

We welcomed Springtime with another Earthroots adventure.  This time a trip to O'Neill Regional Park where Nate and Allie made Bow Drill Fire Kits.  The kids mostly used mulefat to make their boards, spindles and bows.  It was a fun day in nature with the added benefit of the beautiful California sunshine.  We'll definitely be back for more.

Remembrance by Carly Stone

This is my original composition Remembrance.  It's dedicated to my Papa who passed away recently.  I worked on notating it with my teacher Ms. Marla and we submitted it to a program called "Composers Today" where real professional composers look at your manuscript and then offer feedback.  I'm excited to see what they'll say about my piece.  Here is a first glance of the sheet music.  Comment and let me know if you're interested in the rest of it and I can email it to you.  Thanks so much!

I Felt Inspired To Share This Quote

The Joy is great of him who strays
In shady woods on summer days,
With eyes alert and muscles steady,
His long-bow strung, his arrows ready.

Culinary Magic

Sometimes cooking can be difficult, but not if you call on a professional chef to help you.  I got to work with Chef Ryan this week.  He came and taught me how to make chicken broth, chicken pot pies, and mushroom risotto!

We also made homemade butter and he taught me some french culinary words like:
béchamel - which means a roux (a mother sauce) made of butter, flour, and milk
mise-en-place - which means everything in place; all your ingredients ready to go
mirepoix - a combination of carrots, onions and celery

It was really fun and everything tasted soooooo good!  If you want to contact Chef Ryan you can email him at macchef15@yahoo.com
He also does catering.
